The fact that the influenza crisis has been associated with swine has caused a lot of trouble for Mexico's swine producers. As a result, pork demand is down about 30 percent. Julio Hernandez, U.S. Grains Council director in Mexico and Central America, blames false information for the influenza being linked to pork safety. "People are looking at the news looking for information and sometimes the news is not a reliable source. It's causing a lot of confusion and panic here in Mexico," he said. "The Council is working to assist all the sectors. We will be in touch with the swine producers to help them as much as possible in trying to manage the situation and hopefully get back to normal levels of pork consumption."
