Corn - Production and Exports
Although corn (or maize, as it's known throughout much of the world) has the honor of being grown in nearly all fifty states, its production is primarily concentrated in the northern and Midwestern states—collectively known as the "corn belt." In the 2010/2011 crop marketing year, (Sept. 1-Aug. 31) the United States grew nearly 12.5 billion bushels (316 million metric tons) of corn and roughly 15% of production was exported to more than 50 different countries. Among them, Japan (32%), Mexico (16%), and Korea (14%) comprise the bulk of US corn destinations. However, with rapidly growing markets throughout the globe, the world will increasingly turn to the United States as its preferred supplier—providing almost half of the entire corn export market, followed by Argentina (17%), Brazil (13%), and Ukraine (5.5%).
